Learning More About the Violin

Finished up The Violin Maker: Finding a Centuries-Old Tradition in a Brooklyn Workshop. (HarperCollins 2007) The author, John Marchese, put me in mind of nonfiction writer John McPhee in his reporting. Apparently this Sam Zygmuntowicz is very famous. By extension I learned about the Emerson String Quartet and Hungarian composer Bela Bartok.

Loved this quote from p.98: “I believe we absolutely need music in our lives–sometimes only music will do.”

Naomi Shemer (an icon in Israeli music) wrote about Jerusalem,”I am a violin for all your songs,” in Yerushalayim shel Zahav…

The violin touches places in our souls where the human voice has only remotely tread.
